Lab Grown vs Mined Diamond: Can You Spot The Real One?
With increasing demand for jewellery crafted with lab grown diamonds, it’s no surprise that many people have questions about the difference between mined diamonds and lab grown diamonds. There has also been a lot of debate whether a lab grown diamond is a “real” diamond.
But before we dive in deeper into answering that, let’s recap what we know about these diamonds first.
Lab grown vs mined diamonds
As you can tell by the name, mined diamonds were formed deep in the earth under extreme pressure and high temperature for as long as three billion years ago. Through volcanic activity, these diamonds are then brought to the surface, waiting to be mined.
On the other hand, lab grown diamonds are the product of science and technology – specifically two methods: high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). HPHT diamonds replicate the process of how mined diamonds are formed in the Earth. For CVD diamonds, it involves breaking down the molecules of carbon-rich gas so pure carbon can attach itself to the diamond seed, resulting in the growth of a new diamond.
Put a mined and lab grown diamond next to one another – chances are you won’t be able to tell which one is which. That’s because they are both diamonds, real ones. They are both essentially pure carbon, they have the same natural inclusions and the same clarity grades. The only difference is their origin.
Comparing the properties of lab grown and mined diamonds
It is impossible for the human eye to identify the difference between the two. But even if you take a closer look in-depth, no such distinction exists in terms of physical properties, chemical makeup and visual appearance.
On the other hand, diamond simulants such as moissanite and cubic zirconia are designed to replicate the look of diamonds – but they are not made solely of carbon crystals. Lab grown diamonds are not only grown from a carbon seed, but they are also formed using cutting-edge technology that replicates the natural diamond growing process. This makes lab grown diamonds as real as mined diamonds.
Which diamond to buy?
Another notable difference is the cost. Lab grown diamonds usually cost about 30% less than mined diamonds of comparable size and quality. While both diamonds have the same costs when it comes to cutting, polishing and inspection, the difference in price comes from the processes involved – especially the heavy cost of mining.
So, if you’re looking to save some cash or splurge for a bigger carat, lab grown diamonds present a better choice – they are every bit as luxurious and dazzling since their fire and brilliance are the same.
Lab grown diamonds also go through the same 4C grading process as mined diamonds. This not only informs consumers of what they are buying, but they can also be assured of the quality of the diamond they choose. The certification will also include whether a diamond is mined or lab grown.
Star Carat Diamond
Cultivated using state-of-the-art technology, the Star Carat line of lab grown diamonds was launched to offer greater sparkle without breaking the bank. Because it differs from the mining method, this provides an eco-friendlier alternative for conscious customers who can now have their dream diamond jewellery for special occasions.
Our Star Carat diamonds are GIA-certified and categorised as Type IIA – reserved for only 1-2% of the world’s diamonds that are the most chemically pure. The other good news is: for a typical 1 carat diamond ring price, you can save up to 40% off compared to mined diamonds or get a bigger carat for the same price.
Newly launched on 1st October 2021, our latest AllStar Diamond collection offers more brilliance, more scintillation and more fireworks display. The first of its own, it presents 101 facets – each one cut with the most precision to shine brilliantly under all light conditions.
Expect an explosion of fireworks display from every major and minor facet as the diamond sparkles on your hand. If you’re looking for a lab grown diamond with value, fire and brilliance, our new AllStar Diamond won’t disappoint you.
To answer the original question, it’s impossible to differentiate between a lab grown diamond and a mined diamond with the naked eye – and we’ve established that lab grown diamonds share the same properties and undergo the same grading process as mined diamonds, making them equally the real deal too.
For the benefit of your wallet and a more conscious purchase, it often makes more sense to opt for a lab grown diamond that can still give you an impressive sparkle and is value for money.
